Case Studies
Boarhunt Garage asked us to attend and assist on a job involving an Armoured Personnel Carrier that had been driven off the side of a Low Loader at Tidworth. The Foden was used to lift the casualty. Blocks were then placed under the wheel and Boarhunt's FM12 then controlled the casualty off the trailer.

The crane on this trailer was being transported for scrap. The estimated weight of the crane was 25 tonnes. As the unit and trailer negotiated a road junction the crane lock pin had not been locked, this allowing the counter weight to slew the cab and pulling over the unit and trailer. The casualty was on a dual carriageway in Southampton and the police ideally wanted the other carriageway to be unaffected by recovery. After assessing the job and lots of phone calls, it was decided three recovery trucks would be needed with two rotators and one boom. Boarhunt garage attended with their rotator to lift the crane while our FH16 lifted the rear of the trailer and our Foden lifted the front. This allowed the lashing chains to be removed. Once this was done the unit and trailer was lowered onto a temporary road made of sleepers so the trailer could travel over the rotators legs. When the unit and trailer was clear of the crane and recovery vehicles, the crane was lowered and winched around square to be reloaded. The rotator and FH16 were rigged for a lift onto the trailer. This was a complex job which went to plan and shows how local companies work well together.

A drilling company asked us to attend a site to see if it was possible to remove a 30 metre drill bit from the ground which their rig was unable to. They estimated a 20 tonne pull would be needed to remove it from the ground. A 40 tonne pull was set up using the Foden and the FH16. The drill bit was also dried with granuals to get the round slings to grip. Once this was done we were able to move the drill bit with a very happy customer.

We were asked by one of our customers to attend an 18 tonne loaded tanker with one wheel in a ditch. Somehow the driver had driven off the concrete driveway. A 7 metre 12" strop was positioned around the tank and the Foden was used to lift the rear and swing the casualty back onto the drive with no damage.

This vehicle tipped over the day before when the load stuck in the body one side. A risk assessment was carried out then receovery work could start. The body was winched back together then the casualty was lifted with the crane and lowered with the winch. The casualty was then rear suspend towed to the main dealer.

The Police asked us to attend a stuck 18 tonne lorry at New Milton, and this is what we found. We set about lifting both rear sides of the vehicle and placing wood under the rear wheels to give clearance on the fuel tank and sideguards. Once this was done the vehicle was winched around and recovered back onto the road.

This vehicle lost control on ice and ended up in a house. We were asked to go and perform the recovery in Salisbury. Once structural engineers had made safe the house, two heavy underlifts winched it out.

We were asked to attend a HGV accident by the Police involving a unit and trailer. The vehicle had come out of a local tip and had rubbish wrapped around the prop which ripped off air pies causing it to jackknife. We used one underlift to winch the vehicle out of the jackknife and then it was recovered to our premises near Salisbury for storage.

Late one Friday afternoon we were called by the local DAF dealer saying they had a rigid 18 tonne lorry about to fall into the River Test in Romsey. When we attended to recover the vehicle, we found they were almost correct, the diff had hit a drain and this stopped it from going in. The Foden was used to lift the rear up and an underlift winched it forward.

We were called by the owner of this vehicle to say they had a unit and trailer off the road. We attended with one underlift which was used to winch the vehicle back onto the road and completed the recovery in Salisbury.

We were asked by the customer to recover a stuck 18 tonne tanker near Bristol. The driver had followed the dreaded Sat Nav and ended up 2 miles from the main road on a track. The Foden was backed down the road which then went into a track. The chain saw was used to cut back low tree boughs to get us to the casualty. The Foden was used to lift the rear of the vehicle back on to the track, then winched fully on to the track. From the pictures you can see how tight the working conditions were.

We were asked by a customer to recover an 18 tonne tanker on its side. The vehicle had lost control on sheet ice and barrel-rolled down the road; luckily the driver was unhurt. The Foden was used to lift the tanker back on to its wheels. The FH12 then towed the casualty to the customer’s workshops.

We were asked to recover a trailer stuck in a field on its own in Andover. When we arrived it became clear that the driver had gone up a narrow windy road and met a bridge too low for his vehicle. He then decided to turn around in a field, got stuck and dropped the trailer. We charged the trailer with air then with the FH16 lifted the front to get the legs clear of the ground. With the other winch the trailer was winched forward. Once on to the road the unit was reconnected, checked over and off he went to deliver his load.

This tanker ended up on its side in a car park at Tidworth near Salisbury. The Foden was used to lift the trailer with air bags. The FH16 was also set up with strops to help winch the trailer over. The casualty was then recovered to our yard for storage. Many thanks to Boarhunt Garage for their assistance.

We were asked to attend a stranded tanker in deep snow near Crawley. The tanker was 3 miles from the main road and the diff locks on the Foden were used to get to the casualty due to the snow. The casualty was stuck on a steep hill. Once assessed it was decided to winch off a tree to get a correct angle to pull. The casualty was then winched to the top of the hill.
